Current thinking talks about a black holes drawing in matter and a white hole at the 'end' expanding that matter. It is possible (no confirmation in Physics literature yet), that the 'steady state' theory of cosmic generation may be revived. Tmxxine August Experiments with XUL are progressing and other languages and in particular on-line resources continue. Lately I have been looking at Lua, Tcl and Linux scripting. XUL can be part of Ajax but is far more secure reliable and long term. The choice of Puppy Linux has proved very functional The main concern is the production and control of gravity. This ability to use gravity seems to be a major concern of fringe science but some credible links are being made in conventional science.

Heavy support for Linux going on. Puppy Linux is the basis for Tmxxine Linux, now expected for release in 3rd quarter of 2005. It will be based on the multi-session Puppy. Basically an operating system on CD-RW. That means you run everything from RAM memory and save when you log out. It therefore has an audit trail, like a wiki. The eventual aim is to run everything from a USB key-drive. This is likely to occur around the time of USB 3. And this is a true story... There I was on Monday, minding my own business, walking along the waters' edge, camera in hand, looking for Herons. It was cold, slightly below freezing, but only the day before I came '...this close...' to the Heron I visit most often. That day, I stood about 8 feet behind him, gazing out at the same patch of river together, until my sneeze broke the silence... and the spell. :) What a sight to watch from a spot directly behind him, as he soared off, his wings extended far on either side of me in that graceful motion of scooping the air and lifting off. I stood frozen, imagining what it would feel like to take flight, and then I remembered the camera. The photo shows the trees and the water and... a wedge of blurred feathers with only the bold patch of white against blue giving a clue that a heron was there. Good thing it was never about the pictures. So, there I was feeling a little sadness at not seeing the Heron Monday, when a flash of orange-red against the snow near the spillway caught my eye. It was just a darting of orange-red among the trees, swooping back and forth and up and down. I grabbed the camera to be able to see it better through the longish lens. Imagine my surprise when it looked like the bird was a Robin. (That might not seem like such a big deal, but in New England, Robins are harbingers of Spring. I have never before seen a Robin in January.) Sunlight cast out a glow of golden late afternoon rays and the trees came alive with Robins. Scores of them, flitting about and singing... and, most importantly, feeding on abundant red and plum berries that still remained in the depth of January winter. What a happy time, watching Robins in Winter! We don't always get what we expect (Herons)... sometimes we get something equally lovely (Robins). And this is still a true story... Yesterday, I showed a friend the Robin photo, and learned that the American Robin is not the same bird that is called a Robin in Europe. Then last night I mentioned to the taxi driver the delight of seeing Robins in January. He told me that the Inuit don't have a word for Robins, but now they do have many Robins because of global warming. So, I checked to see if there was anything about Inuit words for Robin on BrainBoost and found another blogger on a similar theme. Last month, someone else told me of a blue-breasted Robin that had been sighted in Scotland. As with my Robins here, it is unusual for the blue-breasted Robin to winter over there. But, maybe there isn't really a blue-breasted Robin at all. A Robin with a blue breast seems to fly in the face of the Robin meme. Could it just be someone with PhotoShop and too much time on their hands? And it all has me wondering about things like global warming and different words for different birds. And what makes a Robin a Robin? How do you define Robin-ness? I know this much. I want the blue-breasted Robin to be real. And i don't care if Your Robin is different from My Robin. And I want Our Robins to stay and sing and watch us while we garden.

Taurus, Moon, Pleiades, Comet Hale-Bopp Gone fishing... star fishing, that is. At last, after two weeks of overcast, the sky opened up to heaven last night. And what a heaven it was. Coal black space with garlands of pearly stars arrayed against it's velvet majesty... Directly overhead, twinkled the warm yellow Betelgeuse, bluish Bellatrix and icy white Rigel of Orion... to the right, Aldeberan in Taurus... So many different colored stars visible to the naked eye. Farther to the right, a bit more faintly, the Pleiades, one of my favorites. This was an expanse of sky i watched nightly for four months a few years ago when Comet Hale- Bopp passed through. I am fond of this patch of heaven. Now there's a new comet in that same neighborhood - Comet Machholz. And last night, pink plastic binoculars in hand, there it was, a bit to the right and above the Pleiades. But don't take my word for it. See for yourself. Overnight snows left a frosting on the back porch and made the fresh tracks so easy to see. Definitely feline, they were far too small for any of the resident cats, who all have an extra 3 toes on each front paw. Out front, the dusting on the front walk leading to the driveway held tell-tale tracks of a bunny. It was a small one that would probably fit in my outstretched hand -- each hind paw left a track smaller than my thumbnail. Judging from the tracks, which were evenly paced and clear in the newfallen powder, the bunny was patiently hopping about, no sign of being chased by the cat. That made me feel good. Out on the sidewalk now, parallel to the street, were very large dog tracks - larger than a Labrador, possibly German Shepherd. Looking at these tracks, it seemed as though the dog was running along with it's human, a jogger even in New England winter. That made me smile, picturing steamy dog breaths on the chill morning air. Then the squirrel darted across the street, across my path, in a tiny blur - bounding over the curb and snowbank, springing from the sidewalk to the base of the pine in a single leap. And, as squirrels are wont to do, he turned facing me, tail skyward and chattered and watched. Slowly I eased up alongside the path he had taken, looking at the ground for squirrel tracks in the fresh snow, but there were none. Perhaps he weighed to little to leave any? Maybe he was moving so fast his tracks were too far apart for me to see. And then in the next block I saw a different track. First a single droplet of blood fresh on the snow. And then a few more, closer together in a straight line. Walking on, watching the path more intently, more and more droplets crimson on the snow as though drizzled in a line... For blocks, this straight red line had me worried. Then, at the corner gas station, near the front step, it was no longer a line of red drops but a puddle, a ruby pool there in the snow. I felt a measure of relief, imagining the wounded one had found care inside. I continued on, turning towards the North, glancing at the ground every so often, feeling better since the bloody tracks were behind me. Or not. There, insidiously, once more were the blood red droplets in the snow just as before, a straight line following my path. Or rather, I was following their path, as concern for the wounded one welled up once again. For the next two blocks, the crimson trail stained the snow and I felt unsettled. And then I saw it. Or rather them... Horizontal stripings, perpendicular to the sidewalk, on either side of me. Distinctive treadmarks. A small snowplow! And the "blood"? Leaky motor oil, nothing more. Blood... oil. Snake... rope.

Tree at Walden Pond, December 31, 2004 A New Year... and Old Tree... I spent a good part of New Years Eve Afternoon out at Walden Pond, which is nearby here. It was a wonderful place to be in solitude and stillness, only a couple of other people about, and the sun was sparkling golden on Walden Pond. There was a stillness, palpable and clear... A timelessness that made it very easy to envision Thoreau walking along the shores or watching the birds or the sunset. Walden Pond is a kettle pond, formed from a receding glacier ages ago. Like all kettle ponds, it has no streams feeding into or out of it. How strange that seems to me. I wonder, does it contain any of the same water it did when Thoreau trod it's banks? I would like to think it might - it's more than 100 feet deep, but maybe evaporation and rainfall have recycled the waters back into itself. Someone had made a snowperson and positioned it on the shoreline, where she gazed in contemplation. Henry David would have appreciated it, I believe.

What does this have to do with tmxxine? Time is nonlocal and non-temporaneous. There is a way we can be connected with events past present and future right now. And when, and where, is it never now?

It's no secret - artists fall in love with their models all the time. I should know, it happened to me and my camera this summer. We fell in love with three of them... Captivated by the blue bee hovering within the bell of a yellow lily, with a dusting of golden pollen sparkling against his iridescence blue self. Struck speechless as the red-tailed hawk swooped down across four lanes of suburban traffic right in front of me and returned, talons gripping prey, flying so close overhead I had to duck. Awed at coming eye-to-eye with the blue heron, the sense of time standing still as we faced each other, uncertain which of us was more surprised at the close encounter along the water's edge. It was a summer for things with wings. Now the bee season is over. Last week they cut down the two trees where my hawk roosts. And soon I will be moving away from this river's edge where I've lived the past decade and more. I went for one last long walk along the river Sunday, looking for the hawks, listening within the woods for their beautiful cry, trying to find their new perch. I didn't find the hawks, but as I got to the end of the bridge, something drew my attention to the left. Right there, not three feet away, was a great blue heron. He was perched on a branch up the embankment from the water's edge, head tucked down, sleeping. Not even three feet away. So close! I think he heard my gasp of amazement, and he startled, then took off gracefully, fully extending his wings as though to clasp the air in joy. He cruised just above the surface of the water, then landed in a cove on the other side of the bridge. I climbed over the fence, scrambled down the hill, then hunkered down and settled in to photographing him as he groomed and preened on the distant shore. It was one of those experiences when time ceases to exist. A photography meditation every bit as full of clarity as any I've known. That's what happens, clarity. Oh, and about the photos? I could show you the photos and you'd nod politely and wonder what I see in them, because the heron is there, clearly, though so very tiny. But it's enough for me. Because it was never about the photos. So instead, the photo up top here is the first signs of icing over on river's surface yesterday, not far from where I watched the heron... Now, today, it's snowing... Beautiful snow. Beautiful snow. ~~~~~ And about your own photos? Share them online with Photobucket. Sort them on your hard drive with Picasa. Show them off in flash animations with Advanced Effect Maker.

We are what we think. Hmmm? Not so fast... Perhaps, instead, we are how we think. My evening walk goes past an unpreposessing doorway with an intriguing sign - National Center for Teaching Thinking. It started me thinking about thinking. There are so many ways to think besides sequentially, logically driven to a single solution or goal. We have 'critical thinking' and 'lateral thinking', we have thinking outside the envelope. We have thinking outside the box that the envelope is in. We have thinking that liberates us and allows for quantum leaps. There are ways of thinking that by their very nature close doors to us, eliminating that which does not serve the goal at hand, always toeing the line linearly, analytically. And there are ways of thinking that generate new possibilities to consider, that fling open every door and window and skylight and let us play in the fresh air. Can those ways of thinking be taught? Yes, according to that name on that modest doorway on Washington Street here, and others. Wonderful! Ready for a peak experience? The peak of the annual Geminid Meteor shower, that is. I am a shameless geek when it comes to meteor showers... I could talk your ears off about things like bolides and earth grazers and which meteors originate from what comet and radiants... Take the word "radiant" - it refers, as Merriam-Webster says, to "a point in the heavens at which the visible parallel paths of meteors appear to meet when traced backward." But think about the primary definition of "radiant," though: 1 a : radiating rays or reflecting beams of light b : vividly bright and shining : GLOWING 2 : marked by or expressive of love, confidence, or happiness Can you think of a better word to associate with meteors? I can't. Tonight marks the peak of the Geminid Meteor Shower at about 22:20 GMT, or 5:20PM Eastern time in the US, but the meteor activity is expected to continue for six or more hours. Greatest likelihood of seeing exploding meteor earth grazers or fireballs (like the photo on this page) is around the peak time. Predictions are for 60 to 120 meteors per hour, weather permitting, maybe more. The constellation Orion is visible to the right - I use Orion a lot for orientation. If you look head on at Gemini, the meteors you see may seem short-tailed, because they are coming right at you. Yeah, me neither.

And yet, a true story. The highway on-ramp was backed up yesterday. I had already missed the train. Turning right, onto the turnpike, would have meant an extra half hour sitting in the back of the taxi. I am good at being patient and usually don't mind being in traffic, but ... Going straight ahead, though, was an option - one I'd never taken before. Impulsively I told the driver to continue driving straight, which would bring us back onto the turnpike only one exit from the regular stop. It was an amazing, meandering drive. The two-lane road paralleled the turnpike the entire way, sometimes separated from the interstate by as little as 100 yards, yet it was a drive through a different world. The sky was misty, foggy, moody in a beautiful way, and the roadway black and shiny. You could hear the swish of the tires. The leaves on the trees and the ground glistened. You could almost smell the rich moist earthy scent of late autumn leaves and mushrooms and soil. We passed through Cochituate State Park, where the view of North Pond shrouded in low-hanging clouds could have been the same scene watched by people centuries ago. The tiny cemetery on the North side of the road was unexpected, the tilted slate headstones, families clustered together, the small stones of children... It was proof in a uniquely human and tangible way that the road had been in use more than 300 years. I like that, travelling roads that subtly reveal to us glimpses of their past, glimpses of our connection with those who have gone before. And there I was, transported back a couple of centuries, imagining the play of children long ago, when the taxi made the graceful arcing loop onto the turnpike exchange and we were back in the 21st Century. Time travel, indeed. We were back on the same highway as every morning... the same and yet not the same. And this is true - things looked different. Architectural details of buildings were there that I'd not noticed before, landscaping on the embankments more beautiful, the pine trees shimmery with raindrops, grass somehow greener and more plush than only the day before, the beautiful white birch tree trunks softly glowing in the mist. Nothing had changed except the route I took onto the highway. What does this have to do with technology? Let me ask this: Do the tools we use on the internet {highway} become part of the lens we see through online?

It's been that way since I was a little girl and my parents roused me from sleep to watch the meteors one balmy August night. That would have been the Perseids back then. Wish I'd kept a journal of all those experiences over the years, like watching meteors from 26,000 feet in a plane over the Rockies, the cabin lights dark... Or standing on the hill out back, transfixed, slack-jawed in awe as a Leonid meteor exploded overhead in a brilliant flash that lit the sky bright as high noon. I was amazed at the trail of golden dust that hung there, immobile, in the sky for long seconds before sinking, dispersing in a sparkly shadow. Disney could not even come close. At moments like that, I'm inevitably drawn to thoughts of people throughout the ages staring heavenward at the mystery unfolding. I feel irrevocably connected with the universe in a way more profound than any religious experience inside any church building. But I digress. There's a new Comet that's visible to the naked eye, Comet Machholz (technically named c/2004 Q2). Predictions are that it will be getting brighter and higher in the sky near the end of December. "Lifesavers Rob Howes, his 15-year-old daughter Niccy, Karina Cooper and Helen Slade were swimming 300 feet off Ocean Beach near Whangarei on New Zealand's North Island when the dolphins herded them -- apparently to protect them from a shark.

"They started to herd us up, they pushed all four of us together by doing tight circles around us," Howes told the New Zealand Press Association (NZPA).

Howes tried to drift away from the group, but two of the bigger dolphins herded him back just as he spotted a nine-foot great white shark swimming toward the group.

"I just recoiled. It was only about 2 m away from me, the water was crystal clear and it was as clear as the nose on my face," Howes said, referring to a distance of 6 feet.

"They had corralled us up to protect us," he said.

The lifesavers spent the next 40 minutes surrounded by the dolphins before they could safely swim back to shore. The incident happened on October 30, but the lifesavers kept the story to themselves until now."

Yesterday I fried my computer. So this morning I meditated and chanted to Guru Rinpoche. Well with a fried power supply (and possibly no mother board) there is little else for HolyGeeks to do. Then I went to do some Christmas shopping. I came across an abandoned PC. However I just walked on. People throw out their old PC's and I was looking forward to some non-computer time . . . However I decided to go back - it was after all quite near to home and it was nicely wrapped in plastic. I met my brother in law and explained what had happened. He wanted to know where I had bought the new case. I got home. It was indeed a brand new case and power supply still in its wrapping (someone had clearly abandoned a self build project). It must have been a message from the Purelands. A few hours later and the mother board was tested and OK everything was inside the new case. the cructacean mug was on the computer and I am typing on the very machine. Ah if only things always happened this way . . . Wait a minute they do. The day before - but that is another story

They are now in decline (such is the nature of the ying and yang - get to the top you have to go down) When Sun take over Red Hat and everyone realizes that an Operating System just needs to be a glorified BIOS with a browser, the world will offer phone connection as a resource. Been putting PC guts into a Mac case So far I had to learn how to remove rivets (you knock out the centres with a hammer and nail and then drill them out) to get rid of some innards Then I had to drill/hacksaw through plate metal to get access for ports at the back At the moment the power supply is external (middle left) Everything else is inside the case (motherboard, hard drive and CDRW were the priority) You can see me just about to run a Knoppix Linux CD In fact I am writing this on the Mac/PC hybrid now The power on/off button works.
